7 Spring and Summer Deck Care Tips

Your deck has been telling us secrets all winter. Are you listening?

That subtle creak when you step on the far corner?

The rough patch that catches your sock as you walk barefoot?

The slight discoloration spreading near the stairs?

These are all ways your deck communicates its needs after enduring another Maryland winter.

At Johnson Lumber, we’ve been “listening” to decks since 1921.

Our lumber yards in Edgewater and Millersville have supplied the materials for thousands of Central Maryland decks, and we’ve learned a thing or two about keeping them in pristine condition.

Here are our top secrets for spring and summer deck care to take it from winter-worn to summer-ready.

1. The Winter Hangover Assessment

Before diving into cleaning and maintenance, take a moment to really understand what you’re working with. Maryland’s unique mix of snow, ice, and fluctuating temperatures can be particularly hard on outdoor wood surfaces.

The Pro Checklist:

  • Walk the entire deck, listening for loose boards or squeaks
  • Check railings for stability (give them a good shake!)
  • Look underneath for sagging supports or water damage
  • Examine board ends and corners for splitting or rot
  • Check metal fasteners for rust or popping

The 15 minutes you spend inspecting now can save you hundreds in repairs later. Most serious deck issues start small and go unnoticed until they become expensive problems.

2. The Big Spring Clean

This goes way beyond sweeping off leaves and pollen. A proper deck clean-up requires attention to detail.

The Lumber Yard Technique:

  • Remove all furniture, planters, and accessories
  • Use a putty knife to clear debris from between boards
  • Sweep with a soft-bristle broom (stiff bristles can damage wood fibers)
  • Clear all drainage channels and scupper holes
  • Remove debris from corner joints where moisture collects

Remember: Those tiny spaces between deck boards? They’re critical for proper drainage and ventilation. Keeping them clear prevents rot and extends your deck’s life by years.

3. Wash Day: The Right Way

Pressure washing can be your deck’s best friend or worst enemy, depending on how you use it.

Our Method:

  • Use lower pressure than you think (500-600 PSI for softwoods, 1200-1500 for hardwoods)
  • Keep the nozzle at least 6 inches from the surface
  • Always wash with the grain, never against it
  • Work in small sections, keeping the spray moving
  • Allow 48 hours of dry time before staining (longer in high humidity)

The number one mistake we see is people blasting their decks at maximum pressure. It etches the wood, creating furrows that collect water and speed up deterioration.

4. Stain & Seal: Timing is Everything

In Maryland’s climate, application timing can make or break your deck protection.

The Perfect Conditions:

  • Temperature between 50-85°F (check night temperatures too!)
  • Humidity below 80%
  • No rain in forecast for 24-48 hours
  • No direct sunlight during application
  • Mild breeze (but not windy)

Wait for the weather window, even if it means delaying your project. A properly applied finish in good conditions will last nearly twice as long as one applied in poor conditions.

5. Furniture & Fixture Care

Your deck surface isn’t the only thing needing attention. Those elements sitting on top matter too.

The Complete Care Package:

  • Clean and protect furniture based on material (different approaches for teak, aluminum, wicker)
  • Check and tighten all fixture screws and bolts
  • Apply protective coating to metal fixtures (especially important near Chesapeake Bay)
  • Seal any wood planters to prevent leaching onto deck surfaces
  • Consider furniture feet pads to prevent surface scratching

Your furniture can actually damage your deck if not properly maintained. Those dark stains under metal furniture? That’s a chemical reaction that’s eating into your deck finish.

6. The Hidden Heroes: Preventative Maintenance

Small actions throughout the season keep big problems at bay.

The Preventative Power Moves:

  • Trim nearby shrubs and trees to improve airflow
  • Reposition planters and containers monthly to prevent uneven fading
  • Clear leaves and organic debris after storms
  • Quickly address any standing water issues
  • Set calendar reminders for quarterly quick-checks

Consistency beats intensity every time with deck maintenance. Five minutes a week beats five hours once a year.

7. The Final Touch: Enhancing Your Space

Now for the fun part—transforming your well-maintained deck into an outdoor oasis.

The Trend Watch:

  • Natural fiber outdoor rugs (jute and sisal are hot this year)
  • Solar-integrated railing caps (practical and atmospheric)
  • Vertical herb gardens on rail planters
  • Privacy screens with integrated lighting
  • Modular furniture arrangements for flexibility
