Winterizing Your Home: The Dos and Don’ts

Winterizing Your Home

Fall is here and you can feel a chill in the air that serves as a warning that winter will be here before you know it. Winterizing your home before the freezing temperatures get here is vital to keeping you and your family safe and comfortable this year. Here’s some helpful advice to follow when getting your home’s interior and exterior ready for the winter:

Do: Test your heating system before the cold days arrive. If something seems off with it, or it isn’t getting up to the temperature you set it to, contact a local professional to inspect the system so that you can ensure it works before it gets too chilly out.

Don’t: Wait until winter to turn on the heat in your home. The last thing you want is a freezing cold house and no way to escape the bitter chill.

Do: Inspect doors and windows for gaps. If you feel any outdoor air seeping in through your windows and doors, consider replacing them. Give JF Johnson Lumber

Don’t: It’s best to never ignore drafty rooms. Cold air that is allowed to seep into your home will cause certain rooms to remain chilly during the winter, even when your heat is running. Not only that, but your heating system will have to work harder than normal to heat those rooms exposed to outdoor air, which will lead to an increase in your utility bills this winter.

Do: Survey your property and the exterior of your home for foundation cracks, gutter clogs, roof issues, and any other signs of damage. Disconnect all hoses to avoid frozen or faulty plumbing.

Don’t: Never let leaves pile up in your gutters, and especially avoid leaving gutters full during the winter months. The snow, ice, and freezing temperatures can cause the leaves to make large blockages in your gutters, giving you additional work to do when you begin preparing your home for the spring.
