Tips for Maintaining and Cleaning Granite Countertops

Granite Countertops
Granite countertops add the perfect touch of luxury to your kitchen but they do require some maintenance.

There are big reasons granite countertops have become so popular, including their beauty and durability that make them so desirable for many homeowners. As great as they are, they do require some level of maintenance to keep them looking as good as the day you got them for a long time. Thanks to the durability brought by granite, the maintenance certainly isn’t as bad as other materials and is ideal for busy homeowners, but there are a few things that must be done. Read on to find out all you need to know about caring for your amazing granite countertops.

Discussing Sealants

Many granite countertops don’t actually require sealants though there are also big benefits that come from using them. Simply by applying a sealant, you can add an extra layer of protection against spills or nasty liquids that could otherwise stain your granite countertops in ways that you find unattractive. Just keep in mind that you need to be certain that your countertops haven’t already been sealed before applying one, otherwise it could cause issues.

What Sealant Works Best?

Ideally, your sealant should be long-lasting with a 10-15 year lifespan so you can get the best bang for your buck. Look for sealants that are resistant to oil, water, and fat based stains so you can be certain that your countertops will keep looking perfect. Higher quality sealants will also be able to properly get into the granite and seal any grooves or spaces within the stone that could cause you issues.

Daily Care of Countertops

Regular maintenance of your granite countertops should include the use of a pH neutral cleanser along with a soft cloth to wipe everything down. Don’t try any of those harsh cleaners or scrubbers as they can leave unsightly marks on your counters. This is especially true if you have a sealant, where prolonged used of these products can leave scratches and wear your sealant down. Most dish soaps are actually ideal for this and will do everything you need!
