Solutions to Common Basement Design Problems

There are many common basement design problems you can encounter, your basement can be more than just a place where you store your belongings. With the right design, your basement can be a place for fun, entertainment, or relaxation.  Many basements have design concerns that are prohibiting homeowners from enjoying this space to the fullest. Take a look at some of the most common issues homeowners face when working with their basement’s original design, and simple ways to resolve them.

Overbearing Columns

One of the top common basement design problems questions we have are about the columns in your basement. The columns in your basement play an essential role in stabilizing and supporting your home’s structure. While they are certainly important, they can also be inconveniently placed when it comes to the living space your basement provides. Most columns are load-bearing, so always consult with a structural engineer before attempting to alter them. They might suggest replacing your current columns with steel or laminated beams. Additionally, a remodeling company can offer design advice and offer products to help you use the existing columns as a part of your new basement design.

Unappealing Ductwork

The ductwork that exists in your basement is there for ventilation, heating, and cooling. Although it’s important to heating and cooling your home, that doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to work with or around it. If you have a high remodeling budget, consider having the ductwork relocated. Since original ductwork is commonly placed in a way that is most effective for moving warm and cool air into the upper levels of your home, you can try to  frame around it and incorporate it into your new design, such as creating a tray or drop ceiling that hides the ducting.

Protruding Mechanical Appliances

It’s common to have appliances spread out around the basement, however, the last thing you’d want to do is move them since it can be costly and create other problems for you. Instead, design around them and close-off an area for your furnace, water heater, and/or laundry machines. Not only will this eliminate the eyesore, but it will also give you another way to get creative in modifying your space.

Water Leaks

Before designing your basement, you’ll want to make sure to fix any problems beforehand. This includes any water leaks and other issues. You don’t want to be greeted with water or mold when you finally sit down and enjoy your remodeled space. Have all air leaks and gaps sealed to resolve this common problem. Afterward, run a humidifier to eliminate any moisture that’s already gotten into your basement.
