Are you considering replacing your windows but aren’t quite sure where to start? As a homeowner, it’s essential to measure for new windows properly and effectively.
This is true no matter what your reason for replacing the windows may be, including an outdated style, repairing damage, or poor energy efficiency. By taking precise measurements, you ensure a seamless installation process and help you make informed decisions about your home improvement project.
At Johnson Lumber, we’ve been helping Maryland homeowners with their window replacements and home renovation projects for over 100 years, so we know a thing or two about the importance of accurate measurements.
Today, we’ll walk you through the steps to measure different types of windows, empowering you to take the first crucial step toward enhancing your home’s beauty and efficiency.
Measuring Your Windows: A Step-by-Step Guide
Before diving into the specifics of measuring different window types, it’s essential to gather a few tools:
- a tape measure
- a pen or pencil
- a notepad to record your measurements
There are ways to measure for new windows with your cell phone, but we like to think the old-fashioned way still works best!
Now let’s explore the step-by-step process for measuring various window styles:
Measuring Awning or Casement Windows
1. Start by measuring the width of the window.
Measure from the left jamb to the right jamb at the widest point.
Take three measurements: one at the top, one at the middle, and one at the bottom. Note down the smallest measurement; this will be your window width.
2. Next, measure the height of the window.
Measure from the top jamb to the bottom jamb at the highest point. Again, take three measurements: one on the left side, one in the middle, and one on the right side.
Measuring Sliding, Double-Hung, or Single-Hung Windows
1. To measure the width of double-hung or single-hung windows, measure the inside width of the window frame from jamb to jamb. On a sliding window, opt to measure from trim to trim at the center.
Take three measurements: one at the top, one at the middle, and one at the bottom.
2. For the window height, measure from the inside bottom of the window sill to the inside top of the window frame. On a sliding window, opt to measure the height in the middle
Again, take three measurements: one on the left side, one in the middle, and one on the right side.
Measuring Bay or Bow Windows
1. Start by measuring the width of the bay or bow window.
Measure from the outer edge of the left side to the outer edge of the right side of each window. Remember that the center window may be the biggest of the three, so don’t assume that all of your windows are the same size even if they look similar.
Take three measurements: one at the top, one at the middle, and one at the bottom.
2. Next, measure the height of the window.
Measure from the outer edge of the sill to the outer edge of the top. Take three measurements: one on the left side, one in the middle, and one on the right side. Record the smallest measurement.
These steps cover the most common window types, but it’s worth mentioning that there are various other window styles, such as picture windows, garden windows, and specialty shapes.
If you have these unique window types, we recommend consulting with our experts at Johnson Lumber for accurate measurements tailored to your specific windows.
