4 Tips for Selecting the Perfect Patio Doors

Patio Doors
Choosing the right patio doors can change how you use the spaces in your home.

These days, there are plenty of options for patio doors out there. Everything is possible, from sliding, French, swinging, and bi-fold patio doors—the options are open to whatever fits your home’s architectural design and what you want at the end of the day. As great as having more options may be, it also opens up the necessity of familiarizing yourself with what each of those options brings to the table. No worries, though, as we have four tips to help you select the ideal patio doors for your home.

1. Considering the Space

While you may have an interest in swinging or French doors, they also require some room to open. This limits your options if you already know you’re going to have large, bulky furniture that may not work well with doors that need to take up even more space. If your space simply isn’t large enough, you may want to consider using a stationary panel with a single swinging door rather than double doors. Alternatively, sliding doors always work for smaller spaces.

2. The Right Glass

Glass is a major component in most patio doors, which means that as important as the kind of door is, so is picking the right kind of glass. Most homeowners opt for Low-E glass which can help reduce your energy bills. Another option is decorative tempered glass, which can offer an extra level of privacy and style that still lets in some of that natural light.

3. Which Material to Use

Ideally, the material you choose is going to be both durable and easy to maintain, lasting for years to come. This is even more important if you plan on using your patio doors often. Some potential materials include vinyl, fiberglass, clad-wood, and aluminum, as these are all options that will leave your doors usable for years to come.

4. Patio Doors Can Change How You Use Your Home

The width of your patio doors can change a lot. If you’ve got a large family who tends to go in and out of the house a lot, wider doors might be much more important. However, if you tend not to use your patio, deck, or porch all that often, it may not be as big of a deal. Wider doors make it much more accessible and usable however.
