3 Considerations Before Picking a Kitchen Backsplash

Kitchen Backsplash
Your kitchen backsplash is an opportunity to express yourself and put some personality into the space. However, there are also some serious considerations to be made when choosing one.

Your kitchen backsplash can be as visible or hidden as you want. Some people opt for busy kitchens with many cabinets where the backsplash isn’t prominent, whereas others choose to make their backsplash the highlight of their space. Either way, there are some considerations that apply to everyone who is looking to purchase a kitchen backsplash. Today, we want to look at three of those considerations and help you determine what’s best for your home and kitchen.

Concentrated Focus

If you walk into your kitchen, there are usually two areas people focus on in terms of design. The first is the area above your range, which is an open and practical space that many people use to hang cooking utensils or get creative with their kitchen backsplash. This is a fantastic space to do something really interesting with your kitchen backsplash if that’s your goal. The other common area is above the sink, which again can be a functional space but is also able to be a showpiece if you so choose. Get creative and people will start to notice all the little details you’ve put into your home.

What About Sizing?

Before you make any purchases, you, of course, need to determine how much material you need. That requires calculating the square footage. This is easy to do, however, and all you need to do is measure the width of the wall by its height and then multiply the two numbers. If you’re still worried about it, most people recommend getting at least 10 percent extra material just in case pieces get damaged, you make mistakes, or you decide to do some more extensive work with it.

Building Material Details

One of the biggest considerations you must make is what material you will use. Traditionally, there are three materials most often used for backsplashes. Glass is an elegant option that makes your home look beautiful and unique, however, it’s also not very durable or cost-friendly. On the other hand, natural stone has an equally unique look but it requires the most maintenance in the form of regularly sealing to keep it working for you. Finally, ceramic and porcelain are very durable, cost-efficient, and easy to maintain. They might not be the most interesting in terms of design possibilities, but they certainly have their appeal.
